Real Men…

leave a comment »

Seen today, on afternoon commute: Bumper sticker reading: "Real Men Love Jesus."

I've been trying to think of how I might counter that with a bumper sticker of my own but so far, I've been unable to come up with a concise way to say:

"Real men don't feel compelled to disparage, publicly, others' belief systems. Perhaps it's a small penis issue. Wait, now I'm the one judging. Dammit! Easy, easy. Here's a Valium. There, there, Rob…"

That's going to require some real estate.

Perpetuating the Divisiveness

The Republican rhetoric that started immediately after last night’s State of the Union address is a clear indicator that Republicans have no interest in working with Democrats in the coming weeks, months, and years. Disagreement is necessary for debate and reform, but empty criticism and trite conservative talking points are of little value. Thanks, Republicans, for ensuring that the divisive rhetoric continues!

Me, the Buddha, and My Morning Commute

leave a comment »

On my drive to work this morning, several people tailgated me, and then quickly sped past me. Rude behavior isn’t something that sits well with me. My first thought was “Boy, if I catch up with one of these people, I’m going to find a way to get them back for being such pricks.” After a few minutes of fantasizing about ways to exact vengeance on my aggressors, I realized how ridiculously unproductive this line of thinking was.

Revenge doesn’t solve anything, unless one’s ultimate goal is fleeting satisfaction. In these situations, I’m often reminded of a verse from a collection of the Buddha’s teachings, entitled The Dhammapada: “‘He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me,’ in those who harbour such thoughts hatred is not appeased.” When we spend time contemplating the ways in which we have been wronged, we only continue to fuel resentment.

Oh, the things I discover on my morning commutes.

The Brat

We just returned from a wonderful vacation this week. The week was perfect — perfect weather, plenty of family, lots of fun, and nothing but relaxation.

It was also the first time that I can way with confidence that my son was a brat. I won't go into the gory details, but there were several moments during this trip when we were the parents with the bratty kid I swore I'd never have.
